A pan-changing approach at Fissler: Quality manufacturer now relies on water-based coatings.
Idar-Oberstein, June 18, 2021. Premium cookware manufacturer Fissler is now using a fully water-based, and therefore resource-saving, coating process. This initially applies to all non-stick pans and woks manufactured in Germany. With this move, the long-established company from Idar-Oberstein is also meeting the needs of its consumers, who place particular importance on sustainable production when buying pans.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important to consumers. In a consumer survey conducted by Fissler, 72% of respondents stated that they are increasingly opting for sustainably produced pans. The premium cookware manufacturer is continuously optimizing its production processes and has made it its mission to be a pioneer not only in terms of quality but also in terms of sustainability. As a first step, Fissler has made the production of coated pans and woks more resource-efficient.
Surface coatings are crucial in cookware manufacturing, as they make the products non-stick, scratch-resistant, and temperature-resistant. Fissler will be using a new coating process in the future, completely replacing solvent-based coatings with water-based ones. Previously, this was only possible for the interior coating of Fissler's non-stick pans and woks. By consistently using water-based coatings, Fissler can significantly reduce solvent consumption and, according to the company, simultaneously lower its CO2 emissions by approximately 70% annually compared to processes using solvent-based coatings. Further optimizations in the CO2 balance are achieved through new plant technology at the Hoppstädten-Weiersbach production site, for example, through increased efficiency in coating application, which reduces the consumption of paint, water, and cleaning agents and significantly lowers aluminum waste. Combined with the durability of its products, this has a positive impact on the environment. The Federal Ministry for the Environment supports this project as part of the Environmental Innovation Programme, which underlines Fissler's commitment to the environment and quality Made in Germany.
The switch to water-based coatings initially affects all non-stick pans and woks manufactured in Germany, including products from the successful adamant® series and the innovative levital® comfort pans . This represents approximately 80% of the manufacturer's pan and wok range. However, this is just a small first step for Fissler on its journey to making its processes and products more environmentally friendly.
